Piestewa Peak is named in honor of Army Spc. Lori Ann Piestewa, the first known Native American woman to die in combat in the U.S. military and the first female soldier to be killed in action in the 2003 Iraq War.
Like Camelback, this hike is popular with locals and tourists alike. We are meeting some friends for a morning hike. It is going to be a very nice day today. There are a lot of people hiking. The trail is great.
As we get closer to the summit, it tail narrows and gets steeper. Hi, Jenny, this shot is for you!
I really can not believe that we are doing this, although there are many climbers much older than we are. Again, some almost jog up. Reaching the top is the motivator. People on their way down offer encouragement to those struggling on the final push. The views from the trail are awesome.
Once at the top, it is amazing. Two summits for us so far. Who would have ever thought that we would be here. Grateful every day.
We rest with friends, Butch and Anita, on the rocky pinnacle that many just drive by. I will never take these beauties for granted again.
To the sweet little climber (3 year old with her mom) that we met at the top, "Keep on climbing, honey; the world is full of constant wonders."
