Canyon Lake

Canyon Lake is one of four reservoirs that were formed by the damming of the Salt River.

The Mormon Flat Dam, which was completed in 1925 after two years of construction, created Canyon Lake, with a surface area of 950 acres.  Located 40 miles east of Phoenix, at an elevation of 1600 feet, in a scenic red rock canyon, this is quite a location.  Touting twenty eight miles of shoreline our tour guide DOLLY is waiting for us when we arrive.

The Dolly Steamboat takes us for ride along the  canyon walls of this amazing lake. Captain Jason, tells us that much of this area was formed from three different volcanic eruptions many years ago.  He shows us petrified wood located in the canyon walls.

The boat journey continues with a sighting of an eagle's nest high on a rock spire.

Around every turn is a new vista, each one prettier than the last.

What an amazing ride.
